OSRS Steam Deck setup: use the official Linux beta first

The OSRS Steam Deck path changed in July 2026 when Jagex released its Linux Launcher beta. Start there instead of following an older Windows-wrapper guide, but keep the beta label and the Deck's specialist SteamOS environment in view.

Start with the official Linux Launcher beta, authenticate in Desktop Mode, and launch RuneLite through that path before adding it to Gaming Mode. Keep the Deck trackpad or a mouse available for login and small settings. If the beta path changes or authentication fails, recheck Jagex sources rather than following a stale wrapper tutorial. If you only need touch-first portable play, the official mobile client on a phone or tablet may be the simpler choice.

The supported path is easier to explain and maintain than an old workaround. Recheck Jagex launcher notes if the beta changes, authentication fails, or your session is touch-first mobile instead of desktop RuneLite.

Controlled setup

Prove Desktop Mode before building Gaming Mode.

Switch to Desktop Mode and download the current Linux Launcher beta from Jagex.
Run the official package, sign in through Jagex, and confirm that RuneLite appears as a client choice.
Launch RuneLite once in Desktop Mode. Set a readable client size and confirm the keyboard and pointer inputs you need.
Add the working launcher path to Steam, return to Gaming Mode, and test sign-in persistence without storing credentials in an unofficial tool.
Create a conservative controller layout for pointer, click, camera, Escape, and the few panel keys you use. Keep complex configuration in Desktop Mode.

Test the part of the session that creates the most friction, not only the easiest five minutes.

Treat Gaming Mode as the final shell. Prove the launcher and RuneLite path in Desktop Mode first.

A trackpad and a few panel keys are a safer baseline than trying to duplicate a full desktop PvM map.

What this setup does not fix

A beta launcher changes the support ceiling.

The Linux Launcher is a beta, and Jagex can change packaging, supported distributions, sign-in behavior, or RuneLite integration. This setup does not promise every plugin, overlay, or Deck control profile will survive an update.
